Instructions

    • 1
Review the science basics behind cotton candy. Simply put, it is a crystalline substance, the sugar, changing to a liquid with high heat, then changing to the strands of spun sugar through the spinning process that adds air.
    • 2
Find two plastic bowls. One should be smaller so it fits inside the larger bowl with a lid. The plastic should be strong enough to withstand the heat of the melted sugar.
    • 3
Drill a series of small holes on the upper third of the smaller bowl.
    • 4
Make another hole in the bottom of both holes, and insert a bolt with the nut on the inside. Use a washer to make sure the melted sugar in your homemade cotton candy machine doesn't leak out.
    • 5
Attach the bolt to the drill. This is your power source and rotates the homemade cotton candy machine. Keep the nuts lightly turned when attaching the bolt to the drill so the rotation occurs.
    • 6
Use the stove to melt the cotton candy sugar mixture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the lid is on the smaller bowl before spinning the hot sugar mixture in your homemade cotton candy machine. You can actually end up with a bowl-shaped concoction rather than the strands that can be shaped into a cone.
  • Try this simpler version. Use a wire whisk and two wooden spoons placed at a distance to allow for quickly moving the melted sugar for one to the next, effectively spinning it in the air. See the resources section for more information.
  • Find recipes for homemade cotton candy online.
  • Making a homemade cotton candy machine is an interesting exercise. On the other hand, rentals of commercial machines are usually quite inexpensive and readily available. If you are doing cotton candy for a party or fundraiser, rent the machine. It's much easier.
  • Remember you are working with a melted sugar mixture that is very hot. Take precautions. You don't want spinning hot sugar to fly out of your homemade machine.
